The Gospel passage for this Sunday is the wedding feast at Cana of Galilee. It is Jesus' first miracle. He turns water into wine and brings a party back to life (John 2:1-11). If we had been at the wedding feast, we would probably have wanted to explain it all away as something other than divine intervention. Manufactured entertainment is so embedded in our cultural consciousness that we script out a sense of awe. We train ourselves to live with an absence of wonder and possibility. Ed Mayo's new book (Consumer Kids) says that British children spend five hours and eighteen minutes watching television, online or playing computer games each day. 90% of teenagers have a TV in their bedroom, as do 60% of five to six year olds - more television means less social interaction. Is it the case that if Jesus was here today, he would only be believed if his story appeared on the Internet or on the News at Ten?
Weekly reflections on the Gospel for the

a week and will never be more than 200 words. If you would
