In the passage for this week Paul is preaching in Athens and he sees an altar to an 'unknown God' (Acts 17:23). He tells people that their worship does not need to be groping around in the dark because since Jesus' had been raised from the dead, they know who they are dealing with. Worship is a basic human attitude. It does not simply refer to what we do in church but to a whole way of being in the world. At its most basic it is gratitude and appreciation. At its most defined it is prayers and hymn singing. The opposite of worship is cynicism. The modern cynicism comes from an absence of hope. If we are cynical and always expect the worst of others, we are not being realistic. We are being destructive. If we don't expect anything of the people that we meet with then we are not going to get anything from them.
