This Sunday is Mother's Day: Simeon who was a holy man saw Jesus in the Temple and burst into praise. At the same time he told Mary that a sword would pierce her heart (Luke 2:32-35). Simeon's words came home to roost when Mary went to hear Jesus preach. The house, where she found him, was crowded and she could not get in. What is more, Jesus told people that his true family were those who did the will of God. The starkness of Jesus' statement reflects the cruelty endemic in the maternal relationship. The mother gives of herself to the child who becomes an adult and then leaves the home. The parental is the last truly romanticised relationship in our society. In East Enders soap opera land all types of relationships finish but never that between parent and child which remains constant. The truth is that many people struggle in the role of parent. Mothers feel guilty if they are out at work, anxious if they are at home and judged if they do not immediately bond with their child. Anyone who gives of themselves for others can end up feeling vulnerable - hug a mum this weekend to show your appreciation.
Weekly reflections on the Gospel for the
coming Sunday are available on request. They will come once
a week and will never be more than 200 words. If you would
