In the passage for this week Jesus walks past a group of fishermen and asks them to be his disciples. Simon and Andrew who were brothers did not ask questions of Jesus but simply stopped what they were doing and left behind a thriving family business to follow him. A key to them being able to do this was that they trod lightly to their social identity as fishermen. They were not hung up on what people thought of them. If we cling too tightly to what we think that other people might think of us then we can find ourselves trapped behind an unrealistic set of social expectations. We end up living our lives in front of a hypothetical audience worrying that we are letting people down. We would worry less about what people thought of us if we realised how seldom they do.
