In the Gospel passage for this week (Luke 14.25-33) Jesus warns his disciples of tough times ahead. In our society, we live in a world of ‘experiential consumerism’ and we can assume that an emotional pay off is ours by right for some decision we make. It is easy for us to judge an action simply on whether it feels right, whether it works for us or as long as it does not hurt anyone else. Jesus is saying that we should not be frightened of suffering and construct our lives to try and avoid it: our honesty might put someone else’s back up, grief might be our expression of love and suffering might be the only indication that we care for someone. The easy option is not necessarily the right choice
