The ethos of consumerism tells us that things come instantly and without effort. At Hammersmith Town Hall I am called a ‘customer’ rather than a ‘citizen’ as if I can buy social justice and cohesion off the shelf. The Gospel this week is about a widow who took a different approach. She kept badgering the judge who finally gave into her prayers, for justice to be done, simply for the sake of a quiet life (Luke 18; 1-8). George Bernard Shaw said that the reasonable man adjusts himself to the world and the unreasonable man insists that the world adjusts itself to him; therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man. What do you care enough about to unreasonable over?
