The passage for this Sunday is about Jesus’ crucifixion (Luke 23:33-43). People taunt him saying that if he were King of the Jews then he would be able to come down from the cross and save himself. They misunderstand the type of ‘power’ that Jesus exercises as the Son of God. Their mistake is to confuse ‘power’ with significance; we can often do the same. Significance is money, social approval and the ability to influence events. ‘Power’, in this instance, is integrity, humility and love; it is self giving and sacrifice that keeps Jesus on the cross. Practice ‘power’ and you always end up with significance; crave significance and you run the risk of ignoring the most powerful thing you have – that is you yourself and your particular way of relating to the world
