ALL SAINTS' DAY
All Age Worship

Visit the church web site at www.ststephensw12.org. You can read all the latest news about the parish. You can also read the sermons which are posted each week

Saints come in all shapes and sizes. It is often the people who least think of themselves as saintly and live their Christian lives in the corner away from the public gaze that best exemplify what is meant by being a saint. God does not want us to be some big shot moral superstar. He wants us to live the morality of ordinariness; it is the rythmn of faithful day-by-day faithful living that captures the heart of God.

    Processional Hymn

    Collect of the Day
    Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

    First Reading                 Daniel 7.1-3,15-18                           (p.1039)
    In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying on his bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.  Daniel said: “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea. Four great beasts, each different from the others, came up out of the sea.  “I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the true meaning of all this. “So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things: ‘The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth. But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it for ever – yes, for ever and ever.’”

    Gradual Hymn

    GOSPEL                         Luke 6.20-31                                    (p.1041)
    20Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.  22‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.  24‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. ‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.  26‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.   27‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

    Amazing love, oh what sacrifice
    The Son of God, given for me
    My debt He paid, and my death He died
    That I might live, that I might live

    What about today’s Gospel

    1. When will God bless us?
    2. What will happen to people whose lives have been too easy?
    3. When do we know trouble is coming?

    Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
    Where there is hatred let me sow love;
    Where there is injury, pardon;
    Where there is doubt, faith;
    Where there is darkness, light;
    Where there is despair, hope;
    Where there is sadness, joy
    (From a prayer of St Francis)
