It is Ivy’s birthday today!

Today is when we are asked to remember the 200th anniversdary of the abolition of slavery. Karen Sparkes is here today as our preacher and she will be helping us to reflect on this issue.

After the service is the Church’s Annual General Meeting (AGM). It is my second AGM at St Stephens. I am very grateful to everyone who has made it a good year. Thank you Marjorie and Shereen, Nathan, Juliet, Barry and Liz, Jill, Tim, Denise, Fioan, Caroline, Paula, Tony and Carol, Elaine, Elwyn, Lima, Pia, Naomi, Zoe, Kevin and everyone else who has made it special.

If you want to support the church financially can you think of doing so by standing order rather than through the collection plate. Barry will talk more about this at the AGM.

We are linked to a parish in Heilengsee in Berlin. There are plans for a group of us from St Stephens to visit Germany in the first weekend in May. If you would like to come on this trip please talk with Juliet. You would stay with a German family and it would be a chance to see the area through the eyes of some local people – should be fun and very worthwhile

If you would like either to be baptised or confirmed can you give me your name. The Bishop is coming to St Stephens on May 17th for a Confirmation Service. There is a Baptism cum Confirmation Course starting on Monday April 30th. This will run for three evenings at the vicarage.

Processional Hymn                    542

Collect of the Day
Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross we may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading                 Isaiah 43.16-21                                         (p.)
16Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, 17who brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: 18Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. 19I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. 20The wild animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, 21the people whom I formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.
Gradual Hymn
GOSPEL                         Luke 10: 25-37                                         (p.)

25A lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 26He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ 27He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’ 28And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’ 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?' 30Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, “Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.” 36Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?’ 37He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.‘ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’

Communion Hymn

Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
Those who seek God shall never go wanting.
Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
God alone fills us

Post Communion Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us that what we do for the least of our brothers and sisters we do also for you: give us the will to be the servant of others as you were the servant of all, and gave up your life and died for us, but are alive and reign, now and for ever.
