Over the last couple of weeks the Sunday youth have been looking at the following facts and will feed back some of their conclusions.

  • Nearly 26 million people voted in the 2001 British General Election. More than 32 million votes were cast in the first season of pop idol?
  • The most common profile of a Christian is a black, African woman aged 26.
  • Every cow in the European Union is subsidised by $2.50 a day. That is more than what 75% of Africans have to live on

Processional Hymn       418   Father, Lord of all creation

Collect of the Day
God, who as at this time taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

First Reading                 Acts 2.1-21                                          (p.567)

1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.  5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language about God’s deeds of power?’ 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’  14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:  17“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Second Reading          Romans 8.22-27                               (p.571)
22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Gradual Hymn                175   Come down, O Love divine

GOSPEL                         John 15.26-27; 16.4b-13                 (p.572)
Jesus spoke to his disciples: 26‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. 4I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.  ‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement:  12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

(Discussion in Sunday Youth on May 21st)

Lucy: It's appalling because Europe is generally very rich but the majority
of countries in Africa are very poor.

Levi: I think Africa is so poor because of corrupt governments have put
these countries into debt. To give money can be like pouring it away.

Mayowa: I don't think it is a simple as giving money to the poor African
countries to balance the wealth. I think we should send African's born in
Europe to go over and use their skills of management to get the route of the
problem. I then think the money should be poured into projects that allow
the Africans to become self-sufficient.

Lucy; I think Africa is really polarised- some parts are extremely rich and
others very poor. Instead of criticizing Europe we should look at how money
is distributed through Africa.

Anton; you don't need money to be rich. I'm very rich ,I have everything I
need - a mother who loves me, clothes on my back and a lovely baby brother.

Nicholas: We need to talk about these things, it makes everyone know
what's going on.

Caroline: But why should any of us care. It doesn't affect us if there are
poor Africans out there.

Group: Because we are Christians

Lucy; It is important to discuss this today as it is Christian Aid week.

Caroline; does this remind anyone of a commandment?

Group: Love thy neighbour.

Nicholas: Everyone is our neighbour

Caroline; people are different-just because they are a long way away it
doesn't mean that we shouldn't care or help.

Paula: All organisations should look to being involved with helping our
neighbours because there is so much waste and we need to share things out
and waste nothing, Marks and Spencers give their sandwiches to the homeless.

Levi: But just because they are homeless why should they get old sandwiches.

Paula; Yes, I suppose it is easy to share something you don' want or need.

Caroline; Marks and Spencers are now advertising the fact that they give
away their food- it would be easy to think that it was just a publicity
stunt but I know that they have been doing it for years.

Levi: Pret are much better because they give their sandwiches away and they
don't have sell by dates.

Mayowa: I think that being a Christian makes you rich. How much money or goods you have should not define your worth, as long as you have enough to live on
