Heilingsee. The parish has enjoyed being linked over the last few years with a church in Heilingsee. Father Ulf has become known and loved by church members, here, and some valuable friendships have been formed between different members of the two congregations. They have now invited us to visit them for a weekend in May 2007. This would provide an opportunity for us to develop the link further. A group of us could go to an interesting part of Germany, be hosted by local families and have fellowship with members of their church.
At the moment I am feeling cautious about accepting this invitation.Over the last year there has been a 20% increase in the number of people coming Sunday-by-Sunday to St Stephens and there are a lot of people in the congregation who do not yet know each other. A trip to Germany would be a fabulous opportunity for those who go. It may be a good idea to arrange a trip with some of the young people in the church. However my concern is that it would not be the best or most effective way for the church as a whole to get to know each other. As an alternative to a trip to Germany for 20 people, I would love to take 40 0r 50 people away for a night at a 'Butlins' camp. We would have fun and it would build up the particular identity of St Stephens as a multi-generation, multi-racial church.
I would love to hear people's advice, opinions, suggestions, and ideas about this. What is distinctive and what people value about St Stephens is the fact that it is a microcosm of the wider community in Shepherds Bush. Long may this continue!
Processional Hymn 278 Alleluia sing to Jesus
Collect of the Day
Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Gradual Hymn 432 From Heaven you came helpless babe
GOSPEL Mark 13.1-8 (p.748)
1As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ 2Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’ 3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4‘Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?’ 5Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.’
